BELTS WITH LINING

For dressing formally belts with a lining are more usually worn. The belts are normally of boxcalf or can be tanned using the vegetable dyeing process which is chosen for its transparent qualities.

The boxcalf type is chrome tanned. The most acclaimed belt has two faces which are of full grain. For the vegetable dyed type the most suitable form of leather to use is from the neck and is finished in aniline. A support on the inside of the belt can give the finished belt more convex forms. The most suitable thickness for this type of leather is 1.6 mm.

A different version, which is also very well known, is a type that uses vegetable tanned leather in different colours with full grain or Nubuck leather inside the belt.

For boxcalf leather it is recommended to use dossets which are wide enough to cut strips along. The performance of the leather and the cutting speed are better and the initial price is lower. If the sides are used they have the disadvantage that the flank is too soft and has a larger grain. The fibre is more open and has an irregular shape. It is nevertheless a good alternative for other types of leather goods.

Another possibility is to use split leather covered with PU. The price is lower but it has a plastic look and does not have the same feel as full grain leather. In some cases the split PU is used only for lining. It may also be used to produce reversible belts which have two colours.
In the case of the lining it is also possible to use other, cheaper leathers, such as pigmented pig leather and pigmented or Nubuck cow split leather.
